Your Ultimate Carry-On Travel Packing List

Let’s talk about the art of the perfect carry-on.

We usually pack everything we think we need for our holiday into our suitcase, and then we toss some “stuff for on the plane” into our flight-approved-sized bag.

But a well-packed carry-on bag is the answer to a smoother, more stress-free holiday — it is your personal go-to kit, ensuring comfort in the air, and peace of mind on the ground. It is your specially curated collection of travel essentials that keeps your trip on track even when things go wrong.

What if your checked luggage gets delayed, or worse, goes missing? A thoughtfully packed carry-on means you aren’t left stranded without all the important things you’d need to still be able to enjoy your holiday.

For the ultimate peace of mind, pair your smart carry-on with a reliable travel insurance plan that compensates you for delay inconveniences or the cost of replacing lost items.

What’s more, for the advanced students amongst us, mastering the art of the carry-on opens the door to absolute travel freedom: leaving the checked bag behind entirely. Imagine the liberation of navigating new cities with just the backpack on your back, and never having to worry about subway stations without lifts.

In this guide, we’ll break down exactly how to pack the perfect carry-on bag, whether it’s your essential in-flight companion or the only piece of luggage you’ll bring. From must-have items to clever travel packing tips, let’s celebrate travelling lighter and smarter.

The Art of the Carry-On When Flying With Children

Flying with children transforms the carry-on bag from a mere convenience into an absolute lifeline. An airline delay or small discomfort might be a minor annoyance for you, but with kids, hunger and boredom can quickly escalate into full-blown meltdowns. And parents with a little baby should also plan for a sudden diaper explosion emergency at 30,000 feet!

A well-packed carry-on becomes your on-the-go command center, equipped to handle tantrums, spills, and unexpected mishaps, ensuring that both parents and little ones stay sane through long security lines, layovers, or lost checked bags.

Your personal packing list will look different depending on the age of your children, as each stage comes with unique demands. Clearly a teether will keep your baby occupied in a way your teenager will never understand!

To make this high-stakes task easy on parents, we’ve created a handy Carry-On Checklist that categorises packing essentials for the whole family — babies, littles ones, and older kids — and for you too. Make sure to download and print this out before your next trip!

The Art of Travelling Light: Pro Packing Tips for Carry-On Only

Finally, for those who would like to take up the personal challenge of travelling light with only one carry-on bag to their name, these packing tips are for you. The key to what goes into your bag is this: Make every single item count.

1. Merino Wool

Merino wool has been a gamechanger for travellers around the world who want to pack light. Unlike standard fabrics, merino wool regulates temperature, wicks moisture, resists odours, and dries quickly. What this means in practical terms: Pack little, wear for longer.

Practical benefits of merino wool:

  • Wear it everyday for a week or two — it won’t smell
  • No need to wash daily — just hang it up to air dry for next-day freshness
  • Sweat doesn’t linger, keeping your underarms dry
  • You’ll never be too warm or too cold, whatever the changing weather
  • Even if you get wet, you won’t be shivering cold in wet clothes
  • If needed, simply wash in your hotel sink and air dry

Two weeks away? With merino wool, you can get away with just one or two dresses or shirts and still always smell and look your best.

2. Alternative Toiletries

How many millilitres is the max that you can bring on a plane? Well, you don’t even have to bother about that if you overhaul your toiletries bag with alternatives. Shampoo and conditioner bars are compact, allow way more uses, and you never have to worry about spills again. Powder shampoo and body washes barely add any weight to your luggage. Solid deodorants like crystal (potassium alum) work naturally and almost magically to keep stinks at bay for the entire day. Add biodegradable wet wipes to your kit — they’re perfect for a quick face and body refresh, especially if shower facilities are hard to find.

3. Smart Footwear

Choose a pair of sneakers or shoes thoughtfully that will be appropriate for every occasion. Many travel sneakers are multi-functional — good for nature hikes, city strolls, and also look classy and dressy enough for a night out on the town. For maximum versatility, pick a neutral colour that will go with everything, such as black, white, brown or beige. Imagine the freedom of not having to squeeze bulky shoes into plastic bags and still be prepared for any activity on your trip!

4. Accessories for Multiple Outfit Looks

No one wants to come home from a trip and show off photos in which you’re wearing the exact same uniform every single day. But you can still create multiple outfit looks by changing it up with different belts, scarves or shawls. These small accessories take up little space and add variety and transformation without adding extra clothes. A reversible jacket or wrap is another great travel item, as well as multi-use items, such as a sarong that can double up as a beach towel, blanket or scarf.

5. Packing Bags

Many travellers constantly sing praises about packing cubes and compression bags. The difference? Packing cubes come in different sizes and allow you to manually compress them while zipping up so that they take up less space. Meanwhile, compression bags come with extra help, with a portable travel-sized vacuum that fits in the palm of your hand. Simply suck all the air out and you’ll get Ikea-style flatpacked clothes. And, if you’re vacuum-less, you can just sit on the bags to get as much air out as possible! While both work well, vacuum bags are better for shrinking really bulky items such as puffy winter jackets.

The Perfect Carry-On Luggage

It’s a fine balance, making sure you have your absolute necessities so you’re well-equipped for any adventure, and packing only what really matters so you get to travel light. Therefore, can there really be a fixed formula for curating the “perfect” carry-on luggage? Nah, your carry-on will be unique to you, your family, and your travels. Bon voyage!
