A valid vehicle is needed to register for the VEP and it’s important to have either comprehensive car insurance or motorcycle insurance to protect yourself from any accidents, theft and damage.. For DirectAsia car and motorcycle insurance, we cover up to West Malaysia. Please check with your insurance provider if your current vehicle insurance covers you from any accidents, theft or damages in Malaysia.
2. What is the VEP and is it necessary?
The Vehicle Permit Entry (VEP is a mandatory permit for all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia. It ensures compliance with Malaysian road regulations and enhances security. The VEP is different from the Touch ‘n Go RFID tag. Therefore, you will need to apply for a VEP and get your RFID tag by 1 October 2024. This applies to owners of all categories of foreign registered vehicles - private, commercial, government and includes motorcycles as well. From October 1, driving into Malaysia without a VEP is an offence and you can be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed for up to 6 months.
3. How do I apply for the VEP and what documents are needed for VEP registration?
You can apply for the VEP online through the official VEP portal. The process involves creating an account, filling out the registration form with your vehicle details - vehicle model, COE and chassis number, uploading required documents, paying the fee and booking an appointment to collect the RFID tag.
Here are the documents needed for VEP registration:
Certificate of Entitlement

Touch ‘n Go is required to pay a road charge of RM20 for entering the at either Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints and for payment on the road. However, motorcycles, government and commercial vehicles are excluded from the road charge.
5.How much does the VEP cost and how long is the validity?
The VEP processing fee is RM10 and it is valid for 5 years. The fee can be paid via credit card.
6. How long does the VEP application process take?
The process can take a few days to weeks from registration to receiving the RFID tag. It is advisable to apply well in advance of your intended travel date. You can also track the status of your application on the VEP portal.
7. Where do I collect the VEP RFID tag?
After registering and paying online, you will be informed on where and when to collect the RFID tag at the designated collection centre in Malaysia. Do check the operating hours before heading down to collect your RFID tag!
Alternatively, you can also opt for home delivery and the shipping charge is subjected to the amount imposed by the courier service provider.
However, due to the overwhelming applications for the VEP, the VEP counter located at 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5 #03-01R is also a collection point of the RFID tag. A fee of $39 is payable at the counter. This is on top of the processing fee (RM10).
8. How do I install the RFID tag on my vehicle?
Do ensure that the surface is flat and dry and it should be at least 5cm away from any part of the car’s metal frame. The RFID tag should be installed on either the top left corner of your vehicle’s windscreen or the left headlamp. Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel will usually assist with the installation at the collection counter.
After the tag is pasted, you are required to take a photo of the fitted tag together with your car’s licence plate and upload it to the VEP Portal. An email will be sent to you once the tag has been activated.
9. What should I do if I lose or damage the RFID tag?
To avoid damaging the RFID tag, do not remove the tag once you have pasted it. If your RFID tag is lost or damaged, you will need to update your vehicle status on the VEP portal and make a police report to the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) when you collect the new VEP RFID tag and an administration fee will be imposed.
However, if your VEP tag is faulty and not tampered with, you will be issued with a replacement for free.
10. Can I transfer my VEP to another vehicle?
No, the VEP is specific to the registered vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
In the case where the vehicle’s ownership is transferred, the existing VEP RFID tag will no longer be valid. It is the previous owner’s responsibility to deregister the car on the JPJ website. However, in the case where the previous owner is uncontactable, the new owner can contact JPJ with their following supporting documents for assistance at [email protected]:
- NRIC as per registered on the VEP Portal
- Registration document from LTA
- Notification on Transfer of Ownership from LTA.
11. Can someone else collect the RFID tag on my behalf?
If you did not opt for the home delivery, the vehicle owner should collect the RFID tag in person. However, if you cannot collect it yourself, please check with the JPJ for possible arrangements or required documentation for proxy collection.
