Dont let drink-driving ruin your life and the lives of those who love you.

As part of our road safety campaign this holiday season we'd like to remind you about the dangers of drink-driving. If you drink then don't drive.

Drink driving in Singapore

Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. A drink drive conviction can result in job loss, strain on personal relationships and higher insurance costs. Our video touches on how drink driving impacts the whole family. Tolerance to alcohol depends on a combination of factors: weight, age, gender, stress and recent food consumption.

The best way to remain safe is not to drink and drive. There is no such thing as a safe limit.

In Singapore a driver can be convicted of drink driving if found with more than the legal limit of 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Even with an alcohol level below the legal limit, a driver may still be charged if it can be shown that he did not have proper control of the vehicle. Again, we want to stress there is no such thing as a safe limit.

Any amount of alcohol reduces your sense of coordination and dulls your reaction time. This greatly impairs your ability to drive safely and turns avoidable hazards into potentially life threatening ones. Drink drivers have lost their lives or severely injured themselves and others. The number of accidents and fatalities caused by drink driving is on the rise. Don’t risk your life and the lives of others.

If you drink, no matter how little, do not drive. Be responsible and take public transport or arrange for someone to drive you home or take a taxi. In Singapore, the city that prides itself on being so well connected, there's no excuse when it comes to finding alternative forms of transport.

The law on drunk drivers

Drink drivers, on conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. They may lose their driving license and have to retake the theory and practical driving tests. In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to 6 months. Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years. They may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused.

* Remember your insurance policy will be invalid if you’re caught drink driving.

The Adrian Pang / DirectAsia.com Road Safety Videos

Drunk driving is on currently on the increase in Singapore. DirectAsia.com, together with Adrian Pang’s theatre company PANGDEMONiUM! Productions, has launched a video campaign to address this and other disturbing trends on our roads.

The DirectAsia.com road safety videos are targeted at both parents and children and focus on dangerous behaviours such as not using seatbelts, drink driving and using a mobile phone while driving. The videos communicate a serious message but deliver this in a way that is intended to reach a broad audience using humour.

The videos were produced and directed by Tracie Pang and star Adrian Pang and both their sons, Xander and Zachary.

Spoiler Alert: Transcript of the video

We've transcribed the Adrian Pang video on drunk driving for you in the section below. To avoid spoiling the video watch it first before reading!

Child 1 and 2:
Happy birthday Dad!
Dad:
Thanks guys but it’s not my birthday.
Child 2:
We know that but we don’t need an excuse to show you how much we love you.
Dad:
Ok, how much money do you want?
Child 1:
We don't want your money, we just love you.
Dad:
I know you’ve broken something right?
Child 2:
No Dad, Go on, make a wish.
Narrator:
Many road accidents are caused by driving under the influence of alcohol. If you drink, don’t even think of getting behind the wheel of the car. Simple as that. Don’t let drink-driving ruin your life, and the lives of those who love you.
