Singapore actor Adrian Pang and his family launch a series of major road safety videos
Seatbelts in Singapore
Did you know that you’re twice as likely to die in a crash if you don’t wear a seatbelt? An unfastened passenger travelling at just 50km/h crashes and suffers the same impact as falling from a third storey building. Chances of an adult surviving that are slim so what chance does a child have? All too often in Singapore we see children seated on an adult's lap in the front seat. In a collision at 50 km/h an infant would be violently propelled forward against the dashboard or through the windscreen. Despite what parents think, it would be impossible to hold onto a child against such force. Take a look at our video here and see what happens to the cake! It's a good indication of just how powerless any passenger would be against such impact. A properly fitted child restraint system can reduce fatal injuries by as much as 75 per cent.
Think the rear seat is safe enough without wearing seatbelts? Think again. Research has found that rear seat passengers who did not belt up were flung forward during accidents. They became human projectiles, which were hurled forward at great force, almost always causing very serious injuries to the passengers in front. Research also estimated that 79% of deaths of front seat occupants could have been prevented if the rear-seat passengers had worn seat belts.
Don't take chances, accidents can happen anytime, even on the shortest trips. Keep your loved ones safe.
Penalties for not wearing seatbelts
A $120 fine will be imposed on the passenger who is not belted up. The driver will be fined $120 and given 3 demerit points for failing to ensure that his passenger is belted up.
All children aged 8 years or below must use a child seat or booster seat along with a seatbelt.
* Remember too that your insurance policy could be invalid if you have an accident whilst not wearing seatbelts.
The Adrian Pang / DirectAsia.com Road Safety Videos
Shocking new traffic police figures reveal that increasing numbers of Singapore families are not wearing seatbelts. DirectAsia.com, together with Adrian Pang’s theatre company PANGDEMONiUM! Productions, has launched a video campaign to address this and other disturbing trends on our roads.
The DirectAsia.com road safety videos are targeted at both parents and children and focus on dangerous behaviours such as not using seatbelts, drink driving and using a mobile phone while driving. The videos communicate a serious message but deliver this in a way that is intended to reach a broad audience using humour.
The videos were produced and directed by Tracie Pang and star Adrian Pang and both their sons, Xander and Zachary.
