How To Report A Car Accident – We Can Help You

May 27, 2013 Car 0 Comments

In March of 2013, Honda unveiled a new safety system designed to automatically report to rescue and police authorities in the event of a car accident.

The new safety technology, which activates when an air bag inflates, will initially be fitted into Honda’s Accord hybrid sedan and is scheduled for the Japanese market this summer. The automaker is then planning to roll out the system to other models, including those sold abroad.

Report car accident to the police

According to a Honda spokesperson, the system allows a driver to immediately notify police of an accident, providing important information such as location. Even if the driver is unconscious, the system automatically reports to police in 20 seconds. In cases like these, time saved can make all the difference between life and death.

“Without such a system, it takes a driver about nine minutes on average to make an emergency call after an accident and a further six to seven minutes before a rescue team arrives at the site, Honda said.”  Kyodo News, Friday, March 29, 2013

Important Tips For Singapore Motorists

Here in Singapore, motorists are required by law to file an accident report with their insurers within 24 hours or by the next working day, even if there is no visible damage to their vehicles or if there is a private settlement between the parties.

“Motorists who fail to report their accidents to their insurers could have their claims prejudiced or declined later by insurers.”  Jimmy Tan, Technical Director, General Insurance Association of Singapore

Crucially, you also protect your No Claims Discount (NCD) by reporting an accident within the stipulated time frame, as failing to do so carries a NCD penalty of 10%.

Even if you decide to settle privately, never agree not to report a car accident.  If the other driver reports the accident and you don’t, your car insurance policy could be affected.
